We are pleased that you have chosen the Village of Altona to call home. Hopefully this letter will answer some frequently asked questions about our town. Garbage Pickup
Garbage is picked up every Wednesday. TR Rubbish does recognize New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. If any of these holidays fall on a Wednesday, pick-up will be delayed one day. You should have your garbage out no later than 6:00 a.m. the morning of pick-up. The charge for garbage is part of your combined monthly water/sewer/garbage bill.
The Village encourages its resident’s to recycle. A recycling bin is located at the municipal building located at 302 S. Depot St. for you to place your recyclables. Eagle Enterprises from Galva, Illinois does the recycling. They do not take electronics, nor glass at this recycling bin. To recycle these products, you must take them to there Galva facility located at 510 SE Industrial Ave. Galva, IL 61434.
Water/Sewer/Garbage Bill
Your water/sewer/garbage bill is due on the 20th of each month. Late fees do accrue, and we do shut resident’s water off for non-payment. There is a $50 reconnect fee applied to the water bill if the water does get shut off for non-payment, so please pay your bill on time to avoid any interruptions of service. Water bills may be paid at Compton Accounting, at 301 S. Depot St. For your convenience, the Village accepts credit cards, cash and your good check for payment. Please review our Water ordinance for any further questions.
Animals
Each household is allowed only two dogs. All dogs and cats must be vaccinated for rabies and a tag displayed at all times. Also animals are not allowed to run at large in the Village. You may purchase your rabies tags from the Knox County Sheriff's Department or from your veterinarian.
Pool Ordinance
If you have a swimming pool (other than the small blow-up type) you can contact the Village employee to read your water meter PRIOR TO ANY FILLING and the sewer charges will not accumulate on the water used to fill the pool. You are allowed one fill per year. The Village Maintenance building's phone number is 309-484-6111.
Parks
The Village has two parks. Both are available for public use. Both close every night at 10p.m. Smoking is NOT allowed in the parks, nor at the baseball diamond. Our parks also has a Facebook page. Please "Like" and "Follow" our parks page to get all of the updates in regards to improvements and events at the parks.
