Attention Area Kids and Parents:
Hey kids!!! Tonight is Christmas Eve and you know what that means... that's right! Santa is coming to town. Have you ever wanted to know where he is at while he is making his deliveries? Did you know that you can actually track Santa? Ask your parents to get online and go to www.noradsanta.org to follow his whereabouts. Be sure to go to bed early so that he doesn't miss your home, and don't forget to put out milk and cookies for him (and perhaps some carrots for the reindeer too).
Once again, on behalf of the Village of Altona Board of Trustees, i'd like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! If you plan on consuming alcohol during your gatherings this weekend, please don't drink and drive - use a designated driver.
The churches in Altona welcome you to attend their Christmas Eve services. Here are their times:
Bethany Baptist Church: Christmas Eve services @ 7:00 pm. Christmas Day service @ 11:00 am.
Immanuel Lutheran Church: Christmas Eve Candle Light service @ 9:00 pm. Christmas Day service @ 10:15 am.
United Methodist Church: Christmas Eve Candle Light service at 5:30 pm in Altona. 8:00 pm Christmas Eve in Oneida. Christmas Day service will be in Oneida as well at 10:00 am.
Let us not forget the true meaning of Christmas.... Merry Christmas everyone!

Hey Kids!!! Don't forget to tell mom and dad to bring you this morning to meet Santa! That's right, Santa Claus is coming to town, right here in the Village of Altona this morning to have breakfast with you at the United Methodist Church from 9:00am - 10:30am. You'll even be able to make a craft. Be sure to show mom and dad this flyer. So remember to be good for goodness sakes, because he is watching you to see if you've been naughty or nice.

As we enter the holiday shopping season, let us all take time tomorrow on Thanksgiving Day to be thankful for all that we have, no matter how little or how much that may be. We live in the land of plenty and freedoms, and there are people all across the world less fortunate than we American's. I'd like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving Day, and I hope everyone has a safe weekend. If you plan on traveling, please do not drink and drive. Choose a designated driver, and live to see the Christmas holiday.

Please consider becoming a volunteer EMT. EMT's and firefighters serve on the front lines when it comes to the health and safety of our communities. Our small communities DEPEND on volunteers in all sorts of organizations in order for us to have the quality of lives that we live. Without volunteers, we would have nothing. I ask that everyone consider what roll that they can play in their respective communities, and give back. Volunteer. Please consider becoming a volunteer EMT or firefighter in our area. Thank you.

Please stop in for breakfast and support our local Altona Lion's Club before you head out this Saturday to do your Christmas shopping. The Altona Lion's Club has done a lot for our community, thanks to the hard work from all of its volunteers. On behalf of the entire Village of Altona Board of Trustee's; i'd like to wish a very Happy Veteran's Day to each and every one of our nation's Veteran's who have served our country. It is the sacrifices that you have made, which has allowed everyone in this country to enjoy our freedoms. America is unique in that way.
I'd like to encourage everyone to take the time to thank a veteran today for their service to our country. Call them, text them, email them, speak to them in person, or if you happen to be out for dinner tonight, please offer to either buy them their dinner or at least a drink. Show them how much you appreciate their service and sacrifices in order for the rest of us to be free and to enjoy the things and freedoms that we do.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! again to each and every one of you. May God bless you on this and every day. Your service will never be forgotten.

September is National Preparedness Month. This is the month that the Federal government has set aside to bring awareness to you and your family in order that you can be better prepared in the event that some disaster should happen. There are all sorts of disasters; fires (both your home, businesses or forest fires like we've seen out west; flooding like in Louisiana; tornadoes like Cameron had a year ago; to a terrorist attack like what happened in New York City just 15 years ago.
No matter what the disaster may be, are you prepared for it? Do you know what to do? If you had to leave on short notice, do you know where your important papers are? If so, can you access them quickly? If you had to evacuate, how long would it take, and do you know what you would need to take with you?
For ideas to help you become better prepared, visit www.ready.gov for some helpful advice. You may also go to the Health and Safety page on the Village website, or just lick on this link: /health--safety.html

Just a friendly reminder that water bills were DUE this past Saturday. Please mark your calendars to reminder yourself that water bills are due, each and every month on the 20th. Shut off's are being done for those who did not pay their bill on time.
Did you know, that when your bill gets shut off due to lack of payment, you not only have to pay the entire balance in full, but a $50 reconnect fee as well PRIOR to any service being turned back on? This can get expensive, and frustrating when you need the water the most.
You can avoid this by making sure that your bill payments are paid in full by the 20th each month. For your convenience, the Village accepts cash, credit cards and your good check for payment. The latest bill has been mailed out, and you should've already received it. So please avoid the hassle of having your service shut off by making sure that your bill is paid early and before the due date of the 20th.
Thank you.

This weekend, as America celebrate's the 240th anniversary of this nations birth, let us take a moment to remember all of those who have sacrificed in defending this nation in order that - "We The People" - can enjoy our freedoms. Despite the problems that this country may face, America is still by far the greatest country in the world because of our freedoms. Freedom is never free. Thank you to all of those who have served in defense of those freedoms.
As we celebrate this weekend with friends and family, whether it be at home, on the boat, or watching fireworks; if you plan on consuming alcohol, please Don't Drink and Drive. Use a designated driver. The police will be out in full force as with every holiday. Let's not make this holiday of celebration, one of tragedy.
Have a save weekend everybody.

On behalf of the entire Village of Altona Board of Trustees, I would like to thank the public for attending this year's Altona Day festivities held on Saturday, June 25th. I would also like to thank the Altona Lion's Club for their hard work in putting this event together. In case you missed it, we had a wonderful parade, the meal in the park was delicious, and the kids seemed to enjoy the bouncy house as well. Thank you to all the parade participants. Without you, there wouldn't have been a parade.
- Thank you to the Ransom Memorial Public Library and the Altona Historical Committee for the upstairs library tour and restoration project that is currently underway. This is a well deserved project.
- Thank you to the Immanuel Lutheran Church for having the ice cream social. The ice cream hit the spot and the deserts were very good.
- Thank you to the Altona Fire Department for the entertaining Fireman's Water Fight display. I'm sure the water felt cool on the hot day.
- Thank you to the Bethany Baptist Church for assisting the fire department in serving the pork chop sandwiches. They were very good.
- Thank you to those who participated and watched the softball games.
- Finally a BIG THANK YOU to the Altona Volunteer Fire Department for sponsoring yet another spectacular fireworks show, as well as all of the individuals and businesses who donated money to make this fireworks show happen. Without the public's generous support, this fireworks show would not be made possible. The show just seems to get better each and every year.
I hope that I didn't miss anyone. It took a lot of helping hands to put this entire event together. Thank you to everyone who had helped in any way.

Attention Area Residents:
Last weekend was exciting. Not only was it Father's Day, but if you were in town hosting a yard sale, you had seen hundreds of people shopping for bargains. Did you know that More on 34 is the forth largest yard sale in the country? Did you know that over the weekend, people from at least 128 different cities where in town looking for those bargain? People from Virginia, California, Florida, Alaska, Texas, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri and Mississippi were in town. As much fun as that was, and as much partying you did after you got rid of your unwanted items, Altona is not yet done.
Be sure to clear your calendar's, because this Saturday, June 25th is Altona Day! There will be a parade at 11 a.m. starting at the grade school and ending at the park along Johnson-Pyle Drive. There will be a meal in the park, along with kid's games, a talent show, an ice cream social, fireman's water fights, baseball games in the evening followed by FIREWORK'S at dusk! What could be more fun! Our newly founded group - The Altona Historical Committee - will have the upstairs of the Ransom Memorial Public Library open for tours as well.
Please see the posted flyers for all of the day's events. If you have any questions about the parade or talent show, please contact Dennis Nelson at 484-4831. This event only comes around every four years, so you don't want to miss it.

It's coming! It's almost here! It's the greatest Village-wide shopping event of the year!
More On 34 - an event, filled with a 120 miles worth of yard sale bargain seeking shoppers is this Friday and Saturday, June 17th and 18th. These shoppers are coming to buy your stuff! If you'd like to make some extra ca$h, then you won't want to miss out on participating in this years event. So clean out those closets and sweep out the garage, and try to get rid of all those unwanted items. You'll be glad you did. Need a few helpful tips? Read these tips below from RealSimple.com or just simply do an internet search of your own for some other helpful tips.
Seven Tips For A Successful Yard/Garage Sale:
Tips for a Successful Garage Sale for a Successful Garage SaleClean out your closets and make a little extra money with these easy garage-sale strategies.
1. Place Your Ad Here
Have your kid help you write an ad for your local newspaper and put signs up around town. Less is more when it comes to effective advertising, so skip the glitter (unless your kid feels really strongly about it) and make signs using bold markers with your address, the date and time of the sale and an arrow pointing in the right direction. You may also place your ad on sites like Craigslist or on the More On 34 website at http://moreon34.com/sellers.html.
2. Enlist Some Helpers
Have your kid ask a friend to chip in for the cause, both by putting her stuff up for sale, too, and volunteering to help the day of. Not only will this double the selection of items for sale, you’ll have an extra pair of hands to help. In the days leading up to the sale, look over and clean all the items. There’s nothing worse than selling a pair of jeans for $3 and remembering there was a $20 bill in the back pocket.
3. Consider Your Layout
When it comes to rummaging through other people’s used stuff, presentation matters: Have your kids help you arrange all items by category, and make it easy to navigate between sections. Instead of throwing books into a box, line them up on a bookshelf for easy browsing. Hang up clothes on an old shower rod and order them by size. (No one wants to dig through piles of precariously stacked T-shirts, and you don’t want to be the one stuck folding and refolding them.) Place hot ticket items near the end of your driveway to lure in customers. If people driving by see something that catches their eye, they’ll stop to take a look.
The same goes for the kids' stuff. Kids love shopping at garage sales almost as much as they love putting them together. So help your child go through all her goodies and separate out the really good stuff to make sure it’s properly displayed.
4. Create Ambiance
Just because you’re setting up shop in your front yard doesn’t mean it can’t have the vibe of a classy boutique. Play some nice background music so shoppers aren’t perusing in silence. If your kid is really into it, he could even open a lemonade stand and sell packaged snacks or your favorite homemade cookies to make some extra cash. Make sure to have a garbage can nearby to keep things tidy.
5. Advertise Each Item’s Value
Make sure all your items are clearly marked with price tags, which will discourage bargain-hunters from offering a bargain-basement price on items that aren’t marked. We recommend setting your kid up with masking tape or blue painter’s tape and letting him go to town once you’ve decided on the prices. After shoppers take their items home, they can remove the tape without the sticky residue that stickers usually leave.
ADVERTISING
For bigger items like furniture, make large price signs so shoppers aren’t searching for that small, elusive price tag. Try these tips to spruce up drab items:
6. Don’t Overprice
The main thing to remember is not to overprice. Although it’s nice to make money, clearing out that excess clutter should be your ultimate goal. A good rule of thumb is to sell things for one-half to one-third their original price. Your kid might be very attached to that old stuffed animal, but even though it’s super cute, it’s still a secondhand product to a new owner.
Also, try to price things with round numbers–25 cents instead of 15, $2 instead of $1.80. This way, you’ll avoid juggling loose change and making math errors when calculating totals.
7. Be Thoughtful About Checkout
Instead of putting all your money in a tin, both you and your child can tie on your cutest aprons with pockets so you have cash on you all the time (assuming she’s old enough to handle the money, of course). Have lots of small bills to make change for customers, and when they’re ready to pay, tally up their items and keep a ledger of what you sold for how much. Once your customers have selected their treasures, have your kid help them wrap up breakables in newspaper and provide bags for easy transport. As the day winds down, don’t be afraid to lower prices or offer everything half off.
Stick with these rules of thumb and you and your child should have a successful garage sale on your hands.

Attention Area Residents:
Be sure to mark your calendars and cancel all of your plans, because you won't want to miss out on the planed events that will be happening in the Village of Altona the next two weekends.
Friday & Saturday June 17th & 18th will be the much anticipated "More On 34!" The weekend when hundreds (if not thousands) of cars, filled with yard sale bargain seekers traveling from Aurora to Galesburg, will be traveling though the Village looking for that special deal. So if you haven't done so yet, spend the weekend cleaning out your garage, attic, basement, and outdoor sheds, to find all of those unwanted items to sell that those bargain seekers just might be looking for. Don't forget to go through your closets and dressers, and get rid of those clothes that don't fit as well. This is the BEST time to make a little extra ca$h and clean up our properties at the same time. May you have a successful sale!

Please attend the service to honor both John as well as those who have fallen before us. Thank you.

Attention Village Residents: The Village of Altona would like to remind those residents with swimming pools about its swimming pool program. You can avoid the sewer charge on your initial swimming pool refill (one time only per season) if you contact our Village employee PRIOR to filling your swimming pool (smaller blow up swimming pools do not qualify - see the Water ordinance to see if your pool qualifies).
Please call the Village maintenance building at 484-6111 and leave your name, address and any questions on the answering machine. Remember, you MUST contact the Village PRIOR to filling your pool, so that a reading may be taken.
This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, the official start to summer. What better way to start off your summer than by having your swimming pool open and ready to use. Have a fun and safe summer.

Attention Village Residents:
1) On behalf of the entire Village of Altona Board of Trustees, i'd like to thank everyone who had participated in Altona's Annual Village-wide Clean Up Day, by sorting through your stuff and throwing out the junk. Not only does getting rid of the clutter help make the Village look better, but it also creates more room for you and makes your property have more value. Again, thank you for your participation.
2) Do you have a pet? Just a reminder that tomorrow, Saturday May 14th from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm at the Altona Fire Station, Dr. Fairbrother will be there administering rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats. Knox County & Village of Altona ordinances requires that ALL dogs and cats be vaccinated for rabies. If you have not taken your pet to your veterinarian for its annual check up, and if your pet is due for its annual rabies shot, then please plan on attending. ALL costs for vaccines are the responsibility of the pet owner. Please see the flyer for full details.

Attention Village Residents:
Today is the final full day to get your unwanted junk to the curb prior to the Annual Village-wide Clean Up Day, which will be held tomorrow, Friday May 13th. All items MUST be at the curb by 7:00 am (as the garbage truck will ONLY make one pass). This event ONLY comes around once a year, so please make the best of it. This is the best time to clean up our properties, and make our homes look their best. Let's all take pride in our properties and make Altona the BEST looking town in the ROWVA School District. Remember, a well kept property and well kept neighborhood means a higher property value for you the home owner.
Please see the attached flyer for details on tomorrow's Annual Village-wide Clean Up Day, and thank you for your efforts in helping make Altona a better looking place to live in, and for our visitors.

Attention Area Residents:
As everyone who travels over the E. Main St. railroad crossing knows, BNSF has not yet fixed the crossing as per the dates they had initially informed the Village of. After leaving a voicemail with the local Roadmaster, BNSF has finally returned my phone call with an update. BNSF has now informed the Village that the E. Main Street railroad crossing should be fixed within the next couple of weeks. Please be advised of any sudden future railroad crossing maintenance closings without advanced notice.
Thank you.

Today is Earth Day! This day is set aside to do something good for our planet. But do you know how to do this? Here are some ways that you can celebrate....
1) Plant a tree. Trees help produce oxygen while absorbing carbon monoxide. A well placed tree can help save you money on your utility bill by shading your home, as well as help block the wind during the winter. Trees can also add value to your property by giving it a more aesthetic look.
2) Pick up trash. Picking up trash around your property, neighborhoods, roads, and parks, helps keep our world a prettier and healthier place to live. Trash placed in its proper containers keeps it out of our waterways where it can cause damage to aquatic life, and it also prevents it from getting into the sewer systems which can cause clogging and extra expense to the taxpayer. Not to mention, that cleaned up yards will add value to your property. You spent a lot of money buying or renting your home, so take pride in it and keep it looking nice.
3) Convert lightbulbs. Changing your lightbulbs from incandescent to LED, can save you MONEY$$. It not only saves you money, it also saves energy. Here is an article that does a good job in explaining this....
https://medium.com/@Display_Sales/earth-day-marks-the-led-revolution-and-the-death-of-incandescents-a6db7d242942#.inc66gj9u
4) Recycle. By recycling you prevent items from going into the landfill, making landfills last longer. In many cases, it takes less energy to create a new product through recycling than it does to reproduce the original item. Recycling can also produce extra income for the recycler as well as producing jobs in the recycling industry.
If we all do our part, even a little; together we can make a difference.

On behalf of the entire Village Board of Trusties, I'd like to thank the entire community for their efforts in making the Annual Easter Egg Hunt a success. Thank you to the Ransom Memorial Public Library Board for organizing the event; the Altona Lion's Club for donating the funds to help buy candy and other items; the Walnut Grove Retirees for stuffing the eggs with candy; and most importantly, the parents for bringing their children to this wholesome event. This is truly a community event that is appreciated by all. Below are some pictures of the event.

Daylight Savings Time starts this Sunday at 2:00am. Don't forget to spring your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed tonight, so that you won't be late for church on Sunday. Also, don't forget to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. If your detector is more than 10 years old, its time to buy a new one. Both fresh batteries and new detectors could save your life.

Attention Village Residents: The Knox County Sheriff's Department would like to remind people that it is illegal to cross highway 34 and park facing north (left curbside) on the west side of the highway (for example: parking in front of the Post Office facing north to get your mail). This practice poses a safety issue. If there are other vehicles around, they could obstruct your view and cause an accident when pulling out. Tickets will be issued if this practice continues. Thank you.

On behalf of the entire Village of Altona Board of Trustees, i'd like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year!!! May 2016 find you all with good health and cheer. May the following quote help guide you in happiness in this new year....
"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. -STEVE JOBS
Just a reminder, if you are celebrating the holiday with alcohol, please don't drink an drive. Use a designated driver. Thank you.
