On behalf of the entire Village of Altona Board of Trustees; I'd like to thank everyone in the Village who had taken the time and effort to help your fellow neighbors during last nights storm. Whether it was helping them clean up their yards, patching a roof, or simply "checking in" on their well being, your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and you have helped make Altona a better place to live. I'm proud to live in a community where its residents care for one another, as well as the well being of their neighbors. Again, THANK YOU for your endeavors.

During this season of the holiday's, we've celebrated Thanksgiving where we gave thanks for all of our blessings. We are now preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and the season of giving that goes along with that. Soon we will be celebrating the end of the old year and ringing in the new.
During this time, let us not forget those in our community who are unfortunate, in need, or just need a little bit of help. How can you help you might ask? Several ways actually....
1) Give to and support your local ROWVA Food Pantry. You may either donate monetarily or physical items. You can either donate through your local church or go to the ROWVA Food Pantry itself. Go the their Facebook page for a listing of needed items to donate.
www.facebook.com/ROWVA-Community-Food-Pantry-741302345948723/
2) Help pay a bill for someone locally in need. You may not think that this if very charitable, but for those who are down on their luck and struggling to get by, they will really appreciate the help no matter how it comes their way. So how does one go about helping in this way you may ask? For example, let's say that you know of someone in town that you would like to help. You could put money towards their water bill, or pay their bill in full all together. Just go to Compton Accounting and tell the person at the front desk that you'd like to pay "X" amount of dollars on "someone's" water bill. This will be done confidentially. The recipient does not have to know. If you'd like to be anonymous about it, simply drop off the money with a note inside an envelope and put it in the door slot. When they open in the morning, they will receive your donation for the individual, credit the person's account, and the matter will be taken care of with no one but you knowing who made the generous gift.
3) Like to help out in a bigger way, but not necessarily in the local area? Donate to the "Warm Neighbors Fund" through your power company, Ameren Illinois. They take those donations to help keep the heat on people's homes during the winter. Contact Ameren Illinois for further details.
4) Give to your church or charity of your choice. There are many good organizations that have the mission of helping people. Just do some research and find the one that fits you and your beliefs.
As you can see from the above, there are numerous ways to help those in need. Please consider helping those in need during this time of giving. It will not only give a helping hand to those in need, but it will warm your heart as well, knowing that you did a good thing.
God Bless and have a Safe and Merry Christmas.

On behalf of the entire Village of Altona Board of Trustee's, i'd like to take this time to thank everyone of our residents who had taken the time and expense to keep their properties looking nice this past year. Whether you had done some sort of remodeling inside or out; resealed a driveway or redid some grout; kept your yard mowed, built a building, or repainted the house; you took pride in your properties and that made you stand out.
It is the continuation of such pride in our properties by everyone one of us in town that will help make Altona the best looking town in the ROWVA School District. This should be our never ending GOAL. So I'd like to challenge everyone to spend the winter to think of ways how we can all improve our properties even more. It doesn't have to be a major remodeling expense. A little bit of paint or landscaping can do wonders as well. Even keeping the trash picked up or the grass mowed will make your little part of the neighborhood looking nice. In fact you can make some money by getting rid of any inoperable vehicles or other junk that is lying about. It is the little things that are done that will make you and the rest of the town stand out.
Again, THANK YOU to everyone for your efforts. Please enjoy the holiday season.

THANK YOU Veterans! Thank you to all Veterans who have served this great country of ours. Whether you served in peace time or time of conflict; fought on the front lines, or were a cook back home in the mess hall at training camp; you have answered the call of duty to serve, and have served your country well. NO job is too much and NO job is too small. If it wasn't for your service, America would not enjoy the freedoms that we do today.
THANK YOU! Have a Happy Veteran's Day!

Now we will take a look at an art form that most people don't think of, Woodworking. Thank you to my Aunt Ronelle for her third photo in the series of handmade art. This bowl was made by my Late Uncle Bill.

October is Illinois Arts & Humanities Month.
All month long, in cooperation with the Illinois Arts Council Agency, the Village of Altona has been displaying various forms of artwork submitted by residents in the ROWVA School District.
When it comes to art, we typically think of drawings, paintings, clay pottery, or photography. But, art can still come in other forms as well. There is also music, ballet, sculpturing and cooking. But there are still many different forms of art. Art can also be in the form of crafts or home made items, like this picture of some home made toys.
Thank you to my Aunt Ronelle for submitting this photo.

October is Illinois Arts & Humanities Month.
All this month, as part of Illinois' Art & Humanities Month, the Village of Altona has been displaying photos of varies forms of art from people within the ROWVA School District. Today's submission is from the Village of Altona itself. It is a photo of a quilt that was made by the late Alice McGee. She had made this quilt in the memory of the late Catherine Stuckey, a retired teacher of Altona Grade School. It depicts some of Altona's history. This quilt was made in 1997. It was donated to the Village, and hangs in our meeting room.
As you see, there are many different kinds of art besides the traditional paintings and pottery. Even creating quilts can be an art form.
Do you have a talent? Do you have any artwork that you would like to share with the rest of the ROWVA school district? If so, please email a photo of them, along with your name and town to [email protected], and you too can participate in Illinois Arts & Humanities Month. Attention Area Residents.... Fall is here. That means its harvest season for the farmers. But this also means that there is another harvest season just around the corner. Deer Season. With the farmers in the fields, deer are starting to move and get active. As the rut gets closer this fall, deer will be even more active. Please drive defensively, especially in the evening and during the night, and watch out for deer. Unless that is, you'd like to have a new hood ornament on your vehicle.
Hunters, here are some dates for the upcoming Illinois DNR seasons.

Attention Residents! The fall harvest season has started, and our area farmers are working long hours trying to harvest their crops. Please drive carefully, SLOW DOWN and be on the look out for their equipment. Let's all be courteous drivers and Share The Road with them. Nobody wishes to be in an accident, and by giving them the space that they need for their equipment, will help ensure that everyone has a safe day. Thank you. |

September is Emergency Preparedness Month....
Have you been thinking of ways to prepare you and your family in the event that some Emergency should happen?
Do you have Emergency cash in your safe at home? In an Emergency, the banks may not be open. If the power is out, credit and debit card machines will not be working; (however with the old school use of a pencil, paper and cash, small mom and pop stores could still do sales transactions - you won't find the big box stores doing this).
In case of a power outage, can you cook your food? Do you have an outdoor grill? If it is a charcoal grill, do you have extra charcoal on hand? Summer is winding down and some stores may consider charcoal as a seasonal item. Do you have a gas grill? Are all of your LP tanks filled up? People's Do-It Center in Galesburg has LP refills for $13.80 for a 20# tank. Do you have Emergency Food or perishable foods in your pantry to get you by?
Are your Wills, Insurance, and other important record information up to date? Does everyone in your household know where and how to access this information?
There are many things to do and consider in order to be prepared for any type of emergency. September is Emergency Preparedness Month. Please take the time this month to prepare yourselves. You and your family will thank yourselves later in the event something bad does happen.

Today marks the 14th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., as well as United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in an empty field in Shanksville, Pa.
September 11, 2001 is the day that forever changed America. The day that Islamic fundamental terrorists highjacked passenger planes, attacked and killed 2977 people in one of the deadliest attacks on American soil. Please pause and remember the meaning of this day. Please pray for those families, emergency workers, our countries leaders and members of our military and their families, that were not only effected by that day's events, but who have also been effected by the wars which took place afterwards. Thank you.

Did you know that if you are paying late fee's every month, that on average you may be paying $40 - $50 extra per year in fees?
Did you know that for your convenience, the Village of Altona accepts credit cards for water bill payments?
Just a reminder... For those people who have not paid their water bill, your account is in delinquent status. Please contact Compton Accounting at 484-8888 to make arrangements to pay your bill and make your account current. The public voting for the Illinois Municipal Leagues "Bright Ideas & Innovations" award has really sparked an interest and has heated up. The two major contenders in early voting for this award are the Village of Chadwick and the Village of Altona.
While the Village of Chadwick may have a good lead, I have confidence with the area public, that with your continued voting support, we can catch up with them and even surpass them. Remember you can vote as often as you like, and for as many ideas that you want. Each vote must be made separately. So, are your kids board? Then have them spend the day Voting for Altona, over and over again. Let's show our community pride by placing your votes for all of Altona's entrees, today and everyday throughout this voting session. I've posted the updated results below. I believe that during the night, Altona may have caught up with (if not had passed the Village of Chadwick), but they had received surge of votes today.
Don't Delay, Vote Today!!! Thank you. Derrick R. Appell - Village Board President

On behalf of the entire Village of Altona Board of Trustees, i'd like to thank everyone who came out and enjoyed this year's Altona Fire Department's Fireworks show. I think that we can all agree that it was worth the extra nights wait due to last nights severe weather.
I'd also like to thank all of the individuals and businesses who had donated. Without your generosity, this event would not have been made possible.
For those who were not able to make it, you not only missed a good show, but you also had missed out on some delicious pork chop sandwiches. We hope that you can make it out to see us next time.
Thank you again to all.

It's the weekend, and a busy one for the Village of Altona. Today is day two of "More On 34". Not only will today be the biggest and busiest yard sale day of the year, but there will also be activities at the grade school later this evening as well (weather permitting - pray for the rain to hold off).
Today is the BEST day to make money off of your unwanted items. Today is also the best day to go around town to pick up bargains as well. So let's get rid of all those unwanted items by marking them to sell. Let's keep everyone coming back to visit us year after year by showing them that the best place to find bargains is in the Village of Altona.
Hungry? There is no need for you to cook today. Stop by either Cooper's Express (located inside the Hometown Express gas station) or the United Church of Altona during the day, then this evening you can let the Altona Fire Department do the cooking for you at the grade school during their festivities. Weather permitting, there will be food, and softball games starting at 5:30 pm with fireworks at dusk. So please pray for the rain storms to hold off. Rain date will be Sunday, June 21st - tomorrow.

Did you know that ROWVA has the BEST test scores in Knox County? Did you know that ROWVA is one of the top rated schools in the area (which includes schools like Washington, Dunlap, Farmington, etc.)? Did you know that ROWVA was awarded the U.S. News and World Report 2014 Bronze Award for Best High Schools?
Now that you know this, do you know of someone who is wanting to move into the ROWVA School District to raise their family, and to provide their children with an excellent education? If so, please ask them to consider Altona. Altona has homes both, For Sale or For Rent that may meet their needs? Altona also has building lots for sale should someone prefer to build their dream home.
Please direct those interested parties to the Village of Altona website for a list of currently known properties to help in their search. This list can change at any time and is by no means meant to be an official accurate listing. This page is only offered as a courtesy to the public. Thank you.

Then grab your pole and head down to your favorite fishing hole!
This weekend, June 5th -8th, 2015 is FREE Fishing Days within the entire State of Illinois. You will not be required to have a fishing license at all this weekend. So if you've put off buying a fishing license to only go fishing once this year, then this is your weekend to go fishing!
So go out and enjoy yourselves in the great outdoors, and catch a BIG one (or at least a TALL tale to tell).

Attention Residents: Notice to Cut letters are being sent out. Please avoid a ticket by cutting, or arrange to have your lawns cut if they are too long. A little dedicated, timely lawn maintenance goes a long way in helping our properties and neighborhoods look the best that they can be. Together, we can make Altona the best looking town within the ROWVA School District. Let's show everyone how much pride we have in our community. Thank you.

Attention Village Residents & Parents,
Unfortunately, this past weekend between late Saturday night (May 30th) & Sunday Morning (May 31st), someone broke a window out of the former grade school building. This was not the first incident. The first time a window was broken, the persons involved were found and ticketed.
This sort of behavior will NOT be tolerated! This is vandalism and is destruction of public property. This is a crime! While the former grade school building may be closed to the public and not utilized, the rest of the property is. The Village is using the rest of the facility for parking for the summer ball games, and the kids are allowed to play on the playground.
While the Village may not have the funds to do anything with the building at the present time, we don't want the building torn up and vandalized either. There is NO EXCUSE to vandalize the building. The Village does not wish for this building to turn into an eye sore. The Village is doing its part by keeping it mowed and looking nice. This behavior MUST STOP IMMEDIATELY!
I have asked the Knox County Sheriff's department to look into the matter. When found, tickets will be issued to those responsible for this act of vandalism, just as they were in the first instance. Again, this behavior will NOT BE TOLERATED!
I am asking the public to contact the Knox County Sheriff's Department with any information about this incident. Their phone number is 309-345-3725 or dial 911. I'm also asking parents to remind your children about the dangers of destroying property, and that is also a crime and penalties for their actions will follow. Together we can nip this in the bud before it gets out of hand. In the future, if you happen to see or hear of any unwanted activities at the school building, please dial 911 to report.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Attention Village Residents & Parents,
Unfortunately, this past weekend between late Saturday night (May 30th) & Sunday Morning (May 31st), someone broke a window out of the former grade school building. This was not the first incident. The first time a window was broken, the persons involved were found and ticketed.
This sort of behavior will NOT be tolerated! This is vandalism and is destruction of public property. This is a crime! While the former grade school building may be closed to the public and not utilized, the rest of the property is. Attention residents....
This is just another friendly reminder that since summer is now upon us, and that we are enjoying the great outdoors; the Village parks and baseball diamond are smoke free zones. Smoking is NOT permitted in these areas. You are however more than welcome to smoke in your vehicles. Thank you for being considerate of others.
In the spring of 2014, the Knox Count Health Department had approached the municipalities within Knox County to go smoke free in order to promote the health of their communities. The Village of Altona was the first community within Knox County to pass a No Smoking ordinance. For the health of yourself and your family members, please consider quitting smoking. Tips are below.
The newest videos from the Illinois Department of Public Health, which the Village had participated in, have been officially released, and they are being posted here for your educational benefit. For the health of yourself, your family members, and your wallet; please consider quitting smoking.

Attention Residents! Just a friendly reminder that the water bills were due Wednesday May, 20th. If you had forgotten to pay your bill, and/or had received the door hanger, you may still put your payment in an envelope and drop it off this weekend in the front door mail slot at Compton Accounting.
Dropping off your payment in full will assure that your water is not shut off due to lack of payment.
Any service that is shut off will have reconnect fees added and they must be paid prior to any service being turned back on.
Thank you for your timely payments.

Are you feeling down because you had missed the Annual Village-wide Yard Sale Day on Saturday, May 2nd? Or were you just too busy and didn't get around to throwing all of your unwanted items to the curb during the Annual Village-wide Clean Up Day, which was held on Friday, May 8th; and now you are kicking yourself because you still have all of "this stuff" that you just don't know what to do with?
Well fear not, because the BEST chance to get rid of all of your unwanted items is just around the corner! What am I talking about?
"More On 34" will once again be happening during Father's Day weekend, June 19th-20th. Over 100 miles of yard sales from Galesburg to Aurora. Thousands of people will be traveling through our Village during this weekend either attending yard sales looking for that great deal, or simply passing through to their destinations. With all of this foot traffic, why not have a yard sale?
More on 34 is your absolute BEST opportunity to clean up our properties and make some money off of your unwanted items. So this weekend while the rain is in the forecast, start sorting and pricing your items. More on 34 will be here before you know it. So start today, to sell it away!!
Remember, if you live off of Rt. 34 and you don't think people will go off of the beaten path to your home, you can always rent a BIG spot in the Village park. But you better hurry, as spaces are limited. See the flyer for details. Good luck with your sale!!

Just a reminder, that the American Legion will once again be hosting Memorial Day services on Monday, May 25th, 2015. The Legion will be honoring those who have passed before us at both cemeteries as usual at the following times....
Walnut Grove Cemetery - 10:30 a.m.
Altona Cemetery - 11:00 a.m. - Pastor Bob Nutzhorn officiating.
Thank you to those who have spruced up their properties making them look nice for the upcoming holiday weekend. For those you haven't done so yet, please try and get them mowed to avoid a letter for long grass. Together, we can all make Altona the best looking town in the ROWVA School District.
Please have a safe Memorial Day Weekend. If you plan on drinking as you celebrate, please don't drink and drive, use a designated driver. Someone or perhaps even your pet is depending on you. Thank you.

Attention Residents: As you start making plans for this weekend, please don't forget about your pets. Why's that you ask?
This is just a reminder that this Saturday May 16th, from 1-2 pm at the Altona Fire Department, Dr. Fairbrother will be administrating rabies shots to your pets as part of the Knox Co. Sheriff's, & Knox Co. Animal Control Departments Annual Roaming Vet Clinic.
The prices for the shots will be the sole responsibility of the pet owner. If you have NOT taken your pets to your local veterinarian for their annual examinations, then please don't miss this event to at least get your pets their rabies shots.
Nothing substitutes a full evaluation from your vet, but at least you will be able to stay within the law by having your pet vaccinated for rabies. Please check the schedule for the dates and locations most convenient for you. Thank you.

On behalf of the entire Village Board of Trustees, i'd like to thank the public for participating in yesterday's annual Village-wide Clean Up Day. I'm sure that you'll agree that your properties look better now that you've eliminated the unwanted items that you had stored for all these years. You should have a little more room to get around your properties as well. Now that spring is here, and you are thinking about all of the improvement projects that you'd like to get done on your properties this year, please remember to call J.U.L.I.E. first. Avoid hitting any utilities and causing an inconvenience to you or your neighbors. Please call 811 and have your area marked PRIOR to any digging. It's the LAW! Derrick R. Do you know what day it is? "Twas the night before Christmas..."; No, it isn't that day, and it isn't Christmas in April either, but have you ever heard of Christmas in May?
"Twas the day before Clean Up Day and all through the house; everyone was stirring, including the mouse!
Items being taken out to the curb galore; mom and dad saying, Quick, kids! Take out some more!
Clean Up Day is a once a year event; please don't miss it, or surely you'll vent!
Today is the last day, to get your junk out; for tomorrow morning, the garbage truck will be out!
Please check again, the 'ol Clean Up Day flyer; if you need some help, consider someone for hire!
While you may continue reading this cute little rhyme; stop and get back to work, because you are losing valuable time!
Today your task, may be a BIG one; but you'll be satisfied in the end, with a job WELL DONE!"
I'd like to thank everyone in our community in advance for taking part in this year's Annual Clean Up Day. This event only happens once a year. Please take advantage of this day and get rid of all of your unwanted items, and clean up your properties once and for all.
A property free of junk and clutter not only improves the look of your home and your neighborhood, but it also makes the entire Village look nicer as well. If we all work together, we can make Altona the nicest looking town in the ROWVA School District.
Please have all of your items set out to the curb tonight, as the clean up crew will be in town early tomorrow morning. They will NOT double back to check for missed items, so just plan on having your things out tonight.
Again, thank you for your cooperation and participation in this year's Annual Clean Up Day.

Did you participate in yesterday's annual Village-wide yard sale day? If so, were you able to get rid of everything? If you said NO to either of these questions, don't get discouraged, because there is still another chance to get rid of all that unwanted junk and clutter once and for all. How you ask? Why the Annual Village-wide Clean Up Day of course!
This Friday - May 8th, 2015 is the Village Clean Up Day!
Please start putting your junk out to the curb this week, and but be sure to have it all out by Thursday night as the pick up crew will not be doubling back. Please see the flyer for those items that will not be accepted. Also, do not put regular garbage out on Clean Up Day.
If you had left over clothing, shoes or textiles that you didn't get rid of on your yard sale, don't throw them away RECYCLE THEM! How? Take them to the USAgain Recycling Bin located at the Hometown Express Gas Station. You can learn more about USAgain by going to their website http://www.usagain.com/.
This is your chance to get your properties cleaned up and looking great! Let's make it a goal to make Altona be the BEST looking town in the ROWVA School District!

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the Walnut Grove Progressors 4-H Club, for their Annual Spring Village Clean Up Day today.
This year as their community service project, they installed landscaping fabric and mulch around all the trees in both the Kufas and Johnson-Pyle Parks, as well as planted flowers in the flower boxes around the downtown area and park. This project was made possible in part by a Community Improvement Grant from 1st Farm Credit Services, a proud supporter of 4-H.
The Village of Altona would also like to thank 1st Farm Credit Services for helping out our local 4-H club, and by making this project possible. Our parks looks so much better after the great effort and time put forward by our youth. Our 4-H club has set an example for the rest of our area of how volunteerism and good works helps make our communities a better place.

Attention Residents - Just a few reminders.....
Today is the Annual Village-wide Yard Sale Day; the day that kicks off the summers yard sale season. If you are having a sale today to get rid of some unwanted items, good luck with your sale. For those of you who are visiting us from out of town, welcome, and we hope that you find some bargains.
For those property owners whose lawns are getting long, please avoid yourself a ticket and get them mowed this weekend. Violation letters and tickets will be issued next week. If you are unable to mow your grass for some reason, please hire someone to mow it for you. Thank you for keeping your properties looking nice.

Today is May 1st. Don't forget to make your May Day baskets. Also don't forget that tomorrow is the Annual Village-wide yard sale day. So remember to go through your unwanted items and get everything set up tonight, so that you can open up bright and early for the yard sale shoppers in the morning. The early bird gets the worm as they say! Good luck with your sale.

For those who may be interested, this is the 40th anniversary of the heroic rescue evacuation in South Vietnam. This is an excellent video showing the caring and diligence of our U.S. Navy. It is worth the watch. Enjoy, and a BIG thank you to all of our veterans.

Attention Residents! Be sure to mark you calendars for some important dates coming up!
Don't forget that this Saturday, May 2nd, is the Annual Village-wide Yard Sale Day. The first Saturday in May always kicks off the summer yard sale season. So if you haven't done so yet, go through your unwanted items this week and prepare to make a little extra money by having a yard sale. Feel free to put up signs on the telephone poles or place ads in paper to bring people to your location.
Also an added reminder, that the Annual Village-wide Clean Up Day will be Friday, May 8th. Please double check the flyers posted for items that will NOT be allowed for pick up. Otherwise, those unwanted items that you didn't sell at your yard sale, you may throw them away.
Have your pets received their rabies shots? If you haven't taken your pets to your vet for a thorough check up, you may bring them to the Altona Fire Dept. between 1-2pm on Saturday, May 16th for the Knox County Sheriff's Department annual Roaming Vet Clinic. You will be able to get your pets their rabies shots. You will still be responsible for the fees. Please see the posted flyer for the dates most convenient to you.

Did you celebrate Earth week? Earth Day was Wednesday April 22, and Arbor Day is celebrated the last Friday of April in Illinois, this year it was yesterday, April 24th. If you simply forgot or didn't know what to do, here are some ideas that you can do all year long to help you do your part for the earth.
1) Plant a tree. Trees help reduce your power bill by providing shade for your home, plus increases property values, as well as esthetics.
2) Visit http://www.arborday.org/ for all of your information on tree care.
3) Pick up trash around your property, your neighborhood, and around town. A trash free area is a pretty area.
4) If you have a storm sewer catch basin along your property, please keep it clean of leaves, trash and debris. This will not only help with the flow of water run off, but it will also not contribute to ground erosion by finding a different route of travel.
5) Recycle. The Village has a volunteer recycling bin located at the Village maintenance building at 302 S. Depot, Altona, IL. Do NOT put electronics in the trash, recycle them. Basically anything with a plug is not allowed in the landfills. Eagle Enterprises in Galva will take your electronics. Electronics MUST be taken to the Galva facility. Do NOT put them in with the rest of the recyclables, Thank you.
6) Reduce your water usage by filling a 2 liter pop bottle with water and placing it in your toilet. This tip could save you a gallon of water per day.
7) Turn off and unplug unused lights and appliances. Even if a device is not turned on, it still uses electricity if it is plugged in.
8) Buy and use energy efficient light bulbs. The savings on energy costs will pay for themselves.
9) Remodel your home with energy efficient windows. Insulate your home. Proper insulation will help cut down on your energy bill.
10) Read the energy tips found in your monthly Ameren Illinois power bill.

Have you taken your pets to your vet lately? Are your pets annual shots up to date? If you have answered NO to either of these questions, then there is good news for you. The Annual Knox County Roaming Vet Clinic is here again.
The State of Illinois, Knox County, as well as the Village of Altona, requires that your pets be vaccinated for rabies. If you have not taken your pets to your vet for a thorough examination, please consider taking your pets to one of these locations and times that are convenient for you. You the pet owner, will still be responsible for the fees listed on the flyer. Nothing however replaces the full examination at your vets office, but this Annual Roaming Vet Clinic visit will at least make you legal in regards of having your pets vaccinated for rabies.
Please be a responsible pet owner and take your pets to your vet for thorough evaluations. There is absolutely no excuse for not having your pets vaccinations up to date. So please save yourself from a potential ticket. Vaccinate your pet. It's the law!

Attention everyone. This is just a reminder that Tuesday, April 7, 2015 is Election Day. The voting precinct for the Walnut Grove Township has moved this year, from the Ransom Memorial Public Library to the Village Meeting Room inside the Village Maintenance Building behind the water tower. The reason for this change of venue is because the Village building is more handicapped accessible. Tomorrow's Consolidated elections will be for ROWVA School Board and Village of Altona Board of Trustees.
Please remember to VOTE! Thank you.

On behalf of the Village Board of Trustees, i'd like to thank everyone who had attended this years Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Altona Lions Club, as well as the Ransom Memorial Public Library. They had a very good turn out. As usual, it didn't take the kids long to gather up their eggs. After collecting the candy out of the eggs and returning the eggs, each child got to pick out a free book from the library.
A special thank you to the Walnut Grove Retirees for their time spent stuffing the eggs with candy. It was appreciated by all.

New mandates to hike cost of water heaters
If you are considering buying a new water heater, you might want to do it soon because updates to the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA) that will go into effect this spring will impact your choices and costs in the future.
In essence, this NAECA update means that it will be mandatory for manufacturers to have new efficiency standards on all residential water heaters made after April 16, 2015. Those changes to gas water heaters will include additional insulation, new flue baffling technologies and the incorporation of electronic ignition in lieu of a pilot light, or any combination of these changes.
Manufacturers have been required to comply with the Department of Energy (DOE) energy conservation standards for residential water heaters since 1990, and the standards were updated in 2004 and 2010. According to the DOE, this 2015 update will result in approximately $63 billion in energy bill savings for products shipped from 2015-2044 along with a significant decrease in carbon dioxide emissions.
While the long-term energy impact is impressive, the affect these changes will have on consumers in the short-term are not as easy to understand. That’s why I talked with Jim Kronk of Universal Plumbing Supply, (248) 542-3888, universalplumbingsupply.net, on my radio show recently to get more insight into how these changes will affect the plumbing industry and consumers. And just like most changes mandated by the government, it will hit our pocketbooks.
“Like so many of our energy initiatives today, at least at first, it’s going to be startling to people how much expense they’ll have for heating their water,” Kronk said. “Of course the idea in the long run is to minimize that expense and save energy, and it will. But you know you have that upfront cost to put into it.”
“If you are anticipating that maybe you would like to replace your heater, or if its giving any signs of knocking sounds or other things that are potential problems, it would be better to consider replacing it sooner than later,” Kronk said.
Changes will include increasing the water heater’s energy factor up two points, which he calls a number that is a fairly realistic guide as to how much energy you are using for heating water. In addition, he said the physical size of the units will grow by 2 to 3 inches in diameter and slightly in height, as well. So, if you have limited space for your current water heater, you will need to have more room when you buy one that meets the new requirements.
Of course, with new regulations comes price increases for the consumer.
“Industry consensus is that prices will go up hundreds on gas water heaters under 55 gallons,” Kronk said.
However, if you have the need for a lot of hot water, for example your whirlpool tub, and are today using a 75-gallon unit, the impact could be huge. “These changes are mostly impacting people who use more hot water,” Kronk said.
He added in order to get that amount of hot water following the new mandates, people that use the larger 75 gallon heaters will either need to buy two 40 or 50 gallon tanks, get a 75-gallon condensing unit that could cost more than $2,000, or go with a tankless water heater.
While April 16, 2015, is the date the act goes into effect, wholesalers and manufacturers will be able to sell their existing inventories after that date, but they can’t manufacture products that don’t meet the new standards after that date.
With the majority of water heaters in use being gas-fired, this law also mandates changes for oil-fired and electric water heaters. Regardless of which type you have today, the bottom line is you will need to be proactive if a new water heater is on the horizon for your home, so you can save some money now.

I would like to personally thank everyone in our community who had volunteered to help dig ourselves out from this snow storm. Whether it was plowing out your neighbors driveways, shoveling the Village sidewalks, or coming to the aid for those either stranded or involved in an accident; your actions helped make our community a better place to live.
My sincere thanks and gratitude to each and every one of you for stepping up to the plate. A job well done. THANK YOU!

Now that the snows and frigid cold weather are behind us (at least for the time being); I'd like to thank each and every one of you who had volunteered and stepped up to help your neighborhoods. Whether it was checking on your neighbors, shoveling your sidewalk(s) (or even the entire block), and remembering to bring in your pets; you helped make this community a better place to live. It is this sense of community which makes living in a small town, the best place to live.
Again, Thank you.

Attention swimming pool owners! Are you planning on filling up your swimming pool again this year? This is just a reminder that the Village of Altona has a swimming pool fill program. To avoid the sewer charges on filling your swimming pool, you MUST call the Village maintenance building at 484-6111 and leave a message for Jason PRIOR to filling your swimming pool. Jason will come out and do a water reading prior to you filing your pool, then he will come out and read your water again, in order for the Village to adjust your sewer charge rates. This swimming pool fill program is only allowed once per year. Happy a safe and fun filled summer.

With nice weather finally upon us, and as we start venturing outside to enjoy the outdoors, the Village of Altona Board of Trustees would like to remind its residents that smoking is NOT permitted in any of the Village parks.
With the recent acquisition of the Altona Grade School facility from the ROWVA School District, smoking will NO LONGER be permitted at the baseball diamond as well. You may find the No Smoking ordinance which was passed on June 6, 2013 under Chapter 04 in the ordinance section of the website. The Village also asks that the public help keep our parks clean by not littering. Please dispose of any trash that you may encounter in its proper place. Thank you for your cooperation in these matters. Together we can keep Altona a clean place to live. --- Village of Altona, Board of Trustees |
