STRIVE TO DRIVE
Have you ever wanted to win $25,000? $100,000? A Band Perry Concert? You might think this would be difficult but it is actually quite simple. Join the FCCLA Leadership Through Service class and together we will win by participating in Celebrate my Drive this year. Celebrate my Drive is a safe driving program sponsored by State Farm that commends teens for making safe choices behind the wheel. Last year ROWVA High School with the assistance of the community, won $25,000 from the commitments we received. The money was used for an LED Marquee sign to inform the community of ROWVA's events and a new trophy case to exhibit ROWVA student's achievements. A portion of the winnings were used to treat students to a surprise safe driving carnival on April Fool's Day. In the world today nearly 1.3 million people die in car accidents every year. on average, that is 3,287 traffic deaths each day. Work with FCCLA Leadership Through Service class in their quest to reduce local accidents. All you have to do is commit to ROWVA. Committing means you go to www.celebratemydrive.com and pledge to drive safely. You can make commitments from every email each day beginning October 15th through the 24th. Village of Altona Halloween Trick-Or-Treat Hours will be from 6-8pm on Friday, October 31st. Please turn on your front porch light if you wish a visit from the ghosts and goblins.
To the parents and youth of our community, here are some Halloween Safety Tips:
1) Go Trick-Or-Treating with a grown-up.
2) Visit only people you know.
3) Make sure your costume lets you see and hear perfectly. You need to be able to watch and listen for cars.
4) Make sure your costume fits. It's easy to trip on costumes that are too big.
5) Wear brightly colored clothing. Put glow-in-the-dark patches or strips on your costume so drivers can see you.
6) Carry a flashlight.
7) Make this and every Halloween a safe and happy one.

Village Board Purchases Grade School Property...
After months of discussions, title searches, and surveying, the Village Board of Altona at it's August 7, 2014 board meeting agreed to purchase the Altona Grade School property from the ROWVA CUSD #208 for the sum of $1.00 with the ROWVA School District to pay half of any and all legal fee's up to $3,000. At this writing, the school districted has yet to have their meeting to finalize the purchase and to sign the documents.
The Village Board decision to purchase the property was on a split vote for various reason's. The Village board wanted to purchase the ball diamond only, however the school board would not agree to sell only the baseball diamond like they had offered to the other ROWVA towns. The Village had to purchase the entire property in order to offer a baseball program for its youth.
The discussion now is how to dispose of the building. Either place it up for bid for demolition (with the thought of local excavator Troy Voss to purchase it, tear down [with little to no cost to the Village] and to build a building to house his equipment); or to place the building up for auction to allow other interested parties a chance to bid and utilize the building. The school building is 99 years old as of this writing.

The Village of Altona would like congratulate all of the members and parents (especially those members from the Altona area) for their great success at the Global Destination Imagination Finals. Below is a copy of their press release.
ROWVA has Great Success at Destination Imagination’s Global Finals
ROWVA’s Destination Imagination team joined 17,000 participants, appraisers and supporters from 42 states and 16 countries in the world's largest creative thinking and problem solving competition at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville last week.
Over 1,400 teams were given challenges and had to find ways to solve them using skills like science, math, technology, theater arts, writing, and project management. ROWVA took 2nd place in the Structure Challenge University Level and 8th place in the Improvisational Challenge Secondary level.
ROWVA team members include Brent Nelson, Harley Carlson, Emily Hennenfent, Montana Carlson, Colin Erickson and Wes Anderson. Ben Thornton, Illinois State student, from Georgetown, IL was also a member of the University Team. ROWVA’s team has participated in DI since 2008. It is their 5th consecutive year winning both regional and state competitions enabling them to attend the Global Finals competition.
Annually 200,000 students form 15,000 teams in 48 states and 30 countries and compete at regional and state competitions for a spot at global finals. “The Destination Imagination Program allows students K-College to learn and experience the creative process. Quantitative reasoning, problem solving, risk taking, collaboration, presentations and thinking on your feet are some of the important skills learned in the program,” said Chuck Cadle, CEO of Destination Imagination. The Challenge program is developed annually to ensure they are relevant and align with National Education Standards, STEM standards, ELA Common Core Standards and Mathematics Common Core Standards. Attention swimming pool owners! Are you planning on filling up your swimming pool again this year? This is just a reminder that the Village of Altona has a swimming pool fill program. To avoid the sewer charges on filling your swimming pool, you MUST call the Village maintenance building at 484-6111 and leave a message for Jason PRIOR to filling your swimming pool. Jason will come out and do a water reading prior to you filing your pool, then he will come out and read your water again, in order for the Village to adjust your sewer charge rates. This swimming pool fill program is only allowed once per year. Happy a safe and fun filled summer.
Don't forget that Friday, May 9th is the Annual Spring Clean Up day!! Please have all of your unwanted items out to the curb by 7:00am. Please scroll down for the notice of items that will NOT be taken. This notice is also posted around town, as well as on our Facebook page.

The 4H club also planted flowers downtown and installed mulch around the Municipal Building.
The Village would like to thank the 4H club for their hard work and efforts. The Village and 4H club would also like to ask the business community and residents to help water the flowers when needed. Thank you. |

With nice weather finally upon us, and as we start venturing outside to enjoy the outdoors, the Village of Altona Board of Trustees would like to remind its residents that smoking is NOT permitted in any of the Village parks.
With the soon acquisition of the Altona Grade School facility from the ROWVA School District, smoking will NO LONGER be permitted at the baseball diamond as well. You may find the No Smoking ordinance which was passed on June 6, 2013 under Chapter 04 in the ordinance section of the website. The Village also asks that the public help keep our parks clean by not littering. Please dispose of any trash that you may encounter in its proper place. Thank you for your cooperation in these matters. Together we can keep Altona a clean place to live. --- Village of Altona, Board of Trustees |

The Village of Altona is in the process of purchasing the former Altona Grade School from the ROWVA School District, in order to keep a baseball diamond in town. As of the April board meeting, there was a dispute with the title. The ROWVA School District wanted to give the Village a quit claim deed. The Village wanted a warrantied deed. Both attorney's are working out the details. Please review the Village board minutes for more details.
